Over 100 Years Of Combined Building Experience

“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”

~ John Wooden

In 1969, teenagers Mike and Pete Cahoon decided they needed to get into a line of work that would allow them to go both to school and support their surfing lifestyle. Apartment building in Houston, Texas had just started taking off and they joined a large production framing crew. They were trained in all phases of the conventional framing process. Little did they realize at the time, that they were to become pioneers in multi-family production framing in Texas.

The brothers swung hammers doing piece work for various framing contractors until around 1974 when they started roofing apartments as well. They went on to grow one of the largest turnkey apartment roofing companies in the US. By the early 1980’s the brothers were framing and roofing thousands of units a year. They had a loyal following of craft crews, some of whom are still with them today.

In 1986 the apartment market in Texas crashed, forcing the brothers to downsize their company. They sought work on the East Coast, where they accepted an offer to help rebuild the Charleston Navy and Air Force bases after the devastation of Hurricane Hugo.  That massive effort required the hiring of over 400 hourly employees. The end result was the major repair of thousands of damaged homes and the roofing of over 3,250 military homes all in just 10 ½ months.

In the mid-1990s they were awarded a long-term contract to help build a city from scratch and frame thousands of homes for Del Webb in South Carolina. To support that effort, they built one of the largest truss and wall panel plants on the East Coast. 10 years later, the U.S. housing market crashed resulting in the sale of their manufacturing plant and the Cahoon brothers going back to their production framing roots.

They have come a long way since 1969. Along with their core management, the Cahoon brothers have completed over 120,000 units of diverse projects. Together, they represent over 100 years of construction and framing experience. Over the years, and throughout challenging economic cycles, they have steadfastly maintained their reputation for excellence and commitment to their craft.

The Cahoon brothers’ legacy continues as their proteges have been mentored for decades in the Razor methods. Jeff Russell and Jason Sanders have been mentored by Mike and Pete Cahoon to carry on the legacy and values that make Razor such a strong partner in the industry. There is a sturdy foundation and a long runway for Razor to continue as one of the preferred turnkey framers in the south, and much more history to be made as the coming decades unfold.
